January Housing Unlimited Staff Spotlight: Angela Martin

Angela is originally from Charleston, South Carolina, but spent the majority of her life in Brooklyn, New York. While working in various retail stores, she attended beauty school in Brooklyn and earned her Cosmetology License.

In 1996, Angela frequently visited friends in Alexandria, Virginia, and quickly fell in love with the city's atmosphere, scenery, and friendly people. This led her to relocate to Alexandria in 1998, where she continued her retail career at Ronald Reagan National Airport.

In 1999, Angela transitioned her career path into Property Management, beginning her journey at Scott Management, Inc. She gained valuable experience working in diverse communities, including senior living, conventional, and tax credit properties. Throughout her career, she has diligently pursued professional development, earning certifications in Tax Credit, COS (Certified Occupational Specialist), and from the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM).

Angela joined HUI on December 13, 2023, after being inspired by her friend and colleague, Tracy Mack, who previously worked with her at the Coalition for the Homeless and enthusiastically shared his positive experience at HUI.

With a lifelong passion for serving others, Angela finds great satisfaction in guiding prospective residents through the home-viewing process and emphasizing the potential for a fulfilling life within the HUI community.

One of Angela's most rewarding experiences at HUI involved resolving a conflict between two residents who were experiencing significant disagreements. Through a facilitated house meeting with the assistance of Cornerstone, Angela encouraged open communication and understanding between the residents. By fostering a constructive dialogue, she helped them realize that their conflict stemmed from a simple misunderstanding. The house is now peaceful, and the residents have successfully resolved their differences.

In her free time, Angela enjoys reading, watching cartoons, and sharing a special tradition with her father by watching "The Rifleman" together. She also delights in spending quality time with friends and family, especially while preparing her signature dish – banana pudding.
