For Program Associate Peter Whitaker, home and community have always been closely connected. Born in Baltimore and adopted at 16 months by loving parents in Washington, D.C., Peter lived in five different areas during his youth before moving to Rockville in 1999—a place he has proudly called home ever since.

"As a teenager, Rockville felt like the best area out of all the places I’d lived," Peter shares. "It was the benefits and services offered here that really made it stand out."

Finding a Purpose and a Place to Belong

Peter’s journey to Housing Unlimited, Inc. (HUI) began through a job coach who introduced him to the organization, noting its convenient location for Peter’s favorite mode of transportation—his bicycle. While connecting with others in the office, Peter heard about Housing Unlimited and decided to apply.

"I’ll never forget my interview on Zoom," Peter recalls. "I enjoyed making everyone laugh, but more than that, I felt truly accepted and embraced. I had never experienced that before, but I’ve felt it every day since working at HUI. It has changed my life forever."

Now a dedicated member of the HUI team for two and a half years, Peter serves as a Program Associate. In his role, he inspects tenant homes, ensuring clean, safe, and comfortable living spaces—while bringing an extra dose of warmth and positivity to every visit.

Spreading Joy and Building Connections

For Peter, the best part of the job goes far beyond administrative tasks; it’s about the people.

"Growing up, I didn't have many friends," Peter says candidly. "This job allowed me to embrace others and learn to like myself more. I love pouring positive aspirations into our tenants, making the staff smile, and knowing I’m part of a much bigger picture working with HUI."

His goal during inspections is simple: to bring joy, light, and encouragement into every home he enters.

Beyond the Job: Art, Music, and Night Rides

Outside of work, Peter is driven by creativity and connection. He enjoys music and art, continually finding inspiration and learning from the people around him. Though he took a pause from painting after losing inspiration, he looks forward to picking up his brushes again soon.

When he needs to unwind, Peter takes to two wheels. A lifelong cyclist who has been riding since early childhood, he especially loves night rides to clear his mind, refresh his spirit, and take in the quiet beauty of the town he calls home.

Thank you, Peter, for bringing your light, positivity, and dedication to Housing Unlimited every single day!
