Housing Unlimited, Inc.

Who does HUI serve?

HUI offers high-quality homes to adults with mental illness who would otherwise have no hope for decent independent housing. HUI's tenants are diverse in race and ethnicity, gender, religion, financial resources, and age. Rents are computed on a sliding scale, based on each tenant's income, and are capped to provide security and encourage employment.

With HUI as their anchor and with housing needs met, tenants are motivated to achieve and maintain a measure of personal independence that in itself engenders therapeutic benefits. They become happier and healthier. With the benefits of community linkage and supported independent living, HUI tenants lead more fulfilling, productive, and stable lives.

How has HUI's supported independent housing grown?

Each HUI home represents an opportunity. Each tenant who moves from dependency to self-sufficiency, from hopelessness to a future with possibilities, represents increased productivity - for self, peers, and the community.

HUI's increasing number of homes and tenants attest to its steady growth and the success of this model.

How does HUI operate?

HUI is administered by an executive director, with assistance from seven staff members. HUI is governed by a diverse Board of Directors composed of people personally touched by mental illness as well as other community and business leaders.
"I don't believe we are in the business of developing housing; we are in the business of developing opportunities for people to help themselves."
Abe Schuchman
