Housing Unlimited is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Montgomery County, Maryland that provides permanent affordable housing for low-income individuals with psychiatric disabilities who are able to live independently.
We provide supported independent housing which separates tenants’ housing from their individual support services. The individuals who live in our homes are responsible for their own health, finances, interpersonal relationships, activities and daily chores.
Rents are computed on a sliding scale, based on each tenant's income, and are capped to provide security and encourage employment.
Nearly 300 very low-income adults with psychiatric disabilities languish on the waiting list awaiting permanent affordable housing in Montgomery County, Maryland. Many of the people that we serve come to HUI's permanent housing from homeless shelters, supervised residential programs, or the homes of their aging parents. We must continue to grow to meet the needs of people who need a permanent independent place to live.
Founded in 1991 by parents of adults with psychiatric disabilities, we acquired our first house in 1994. Today we own 54 homes throughout Montgomery County, MD serving over 150 individuals. Recently, the Maryland Governor's budget was passed, and included funding for an additional four homes.
